A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
