The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
